Called to the Pentagon to view the Nazi’s sinister propaganda films, said Mr. Scott, the director became physically ill. In a stroke of genius Mr. Capra decided to use the same footage in Allied films, films that would be shown to every fighting man and woman.
Col. Capra was awarded the Order of the British Empire personally by Winston Churchill, and Gen. Marshall conveyed on him this country’s highest non-combat honor, the Distinguished Service Medal.
“There was nothing the government could ask him to do that he would not do,” said Mr. Scott.
“He had so much to do with our winning World War II, yet he was totally anti-war,” said Mr. Scott.
Immigrants often make the best Americans, said Mr. Scott, and Mr. Capra was no exception. “He never lost sight of the fact that to him this was the greatest country in the world. His family came to America because of his image of America as the land of the free. You could, with hard work and self-improvement, make it here,” said Mr. Scott.
