When a series of fights erupted in the parking lot of the Washington Fire Hall last week, the perpetrators did more than destroy the calm and peaceful evening for the approxi. mately 200 people there to dance and listen to music. They also cast into doubt the future of the fire hall dances, dances that have raised hundreds of dollars for the Washington Volunteer Fire Company as well as provided a much needed cultural outlet in this community.
This week a Washington, Va. man was arrested and charged with felonious assault in connection with the evening’s ruckus. For a small community like ours, that’s cause for concern.
Understandably, the fire department is considering doing away with the dances, but we think there are simple steps that could be taken to avoid any such scene taking place in the future.
