The Rappahannock High varsity soccer team opens its season at the high school field against Eastern Mennonite at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 with a new coach and a fairly young squad.
“Everyone has worked extremely hard, even with some knowing they will be sitting on the bench,” said first-year coach Uli Maeyer, who coached at Wakefield for several years. “They know we are building for the future.”
Although the Panthers failed to win a game last year, Coach Maeyer said the players are upbeat, and he has seen considerable improvement already.
“My aim for this season is to win some games and to improve, and they have already improved, which is what this win indicates,” he said following the team’s 1-0 defeat of a younger travelling team from Warrenton last Thursday.
