Unanticipated expenses for special education will cost the school system approximately $42,500. -
At Tuesday night’s School Board meeting School Superintendent David Gangel said there is a special education student who needs a program not available in Rappahannock Public Schools. To hire a teacher for that student would cost about $30,000, he said. The alternative is to pay $12,500 in tuition to a neighboring school system that has such a program and to provide an aide to travel with the student to the neighboring county.
In addition numbers of students needing placement in classes for the learning disabled/emotionally disturbed will have passed allowed class sizes for the three such classes at the elementary school, he said. A teacher can have up to eight such students in a class. With an aide, she can have up to 10. There are 30 students who have already in such classes or who have been identified as needing this instruction. The problem could be solved by hiring a third aide for the teachers, but the classes would immediately be at capacity.
