Republican
Plan Faulted
To the Editor:
How stupid do the Republicans think the American people are? Three hundred of them stood on the Capitol steps and promised us that if we elect them to Congress they will give us what Reagan promised us in 1981: tax cuts for the rich, increased defense spending and balanced budgets.
Instead, we got a $3.5 trillion increase in the national debt, on which we are paying $250 billion dollars in annual interest, $1,000 a year for every man, woman and child in the nation. Since working men and women pay most of the taxes, and the wealthy own most of the bonds, this means a direct transfer of cash from middle-class taxpayers to the most wealthy among us.
In contrast, President Clinton’s budget reform raised the income tax rates for 34,000 Virginians (mostly couples with annual incomes over $180,000) and increased the tax on the social security benefits of the wealthiest retirees. It also reduced the income tax for 300,000 working Virginians and gave us reduced budget deficits for three years in a row, for the first time since Harry Truman was president.
Anybody who votes for a Republican for the U.S. Senate or House deserves what he or she gets.
