Appearing Sunday morning at a debate at the Jewish Community Center in Annandale with his two opponents, Sen. Charles Robb (D-Va.) and independent Marshall Coleman, Oliver North unleashed a barrage of criticism at President Clinton’s defense policies that stole headlines around the state.
North said cuts in the defense budget initiated by President Clinton have left the United States with a “hollow force” incapable of repelling an Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
“Clinton does not have the forces he needs and the Iraqi’s know that,” North told reporters outside the Jewish Community Center after the debate. North said the forces the President needs now have been demobilized. “They’re gone. He sent them out. ” i Coming as they did during a tense military standoff between Iraq and the United States, North’s remarks drew heavy flak from Robb and Coleman.
Robb, himself a former Marine,, said North was “dead wrong” about the military. Coleman went even further in criticizing
