Ron Makela and Kaye Kohler from Amissville had a suggestion that would eliminate the need to make a decision on that. They said they represented several parents who were concerned about the size of kindergarten classes and asked for a fifth section of kindergarten.
Dr. Gangel said that a teacher had been hired to provide alternative education and in-school suspension who could have taught kindergarten if the number of students in the class reached 92. There are currently 86 students in kindergarten, he said. The elementary school faculty set a high priority on finding aiway to deal with a small number of children “who are out of control,” he said. “It’s not fair to the other children in the classes when the situation is out of control,” he added. When there are no children needing that program the teacher is free' to work as an extra hand with kindergarten. That is what she is now doing, he said. But usually the severe discipline problems are greater in the second semester.
! Mr. Makela said, “My concern is there are a lot of efforts on both ends of the scale and results reflect that. The kids in the middle tend to float.”
