Dr. Gangel announced that pupil personnel director Margarita Piper will retire at the end of June. He asked the board for authorization to advertise for the position now so that the person hired will have an opportunity to work with Mrs. Piper before she leaves. The board approved this with the understanding that the new person will not be paid until July.
Dr. Chappell reported on home schooled children. He said that parents applied to home school 30 children last year and 25 this year. Six children have returned to the public schools from home schooling this year, he said. In addition nine students were approved for religious exemption from public education last year and six additional this year. Parents are not required to re-apply each year for religious exemption. However, eight students previously approved for religious examption have returned to public school this year, he added.
The board approved changing the addresses of the schools so they can be served by the Washington Post Office. Currently Wilson Atkins goes to Sperryville to pick up mail and deliver it to the two schools and the School Board office. The Washington Post Office will deliver the mail to the schools.
The board approved field trips and fundraising activities. Mr. Makela suggested many people would prefer giving a cash contribution to buying products the students sell. He asked the board to find a way to make that posssible.
