This is the third year in a row that the budget deficit has been cut. We have a crime bill that stiffened the penalties against violent offenders but also1 funded programs to avoid creating a new generation of criminals. There is a gun control law that has kept weapons out of the hands of felony offenders without infringing on the rights of legitimate gun owners and hunters. We have a family leave law so that if a family member is seriously ill, time can be taken to care for that loved one without fear of losing our job. For the first time in our history south of the border we have itervened militarily on behalf of the poor to promote democracy rather than a military dictatorship. Our military is seen as a force of justice by the majority of the Haitien people. We could have had a health reform bill that would have safeguarded the health needs of all Americans. We also could have had a campaign finance reform law so that lobbyists couldn’t buy and sell congresspeople. Republicans, playing party politics, shot down the last two measures. A Democrat president and Congress initiated and passed all the other measures.
