Jane and Carl Coon told the audience at last Friday’s program at the library they found Kyrgystan in the former Soviet Union much more open than Xinjiang province in China.
In 1993 they toured in Central Asia.
Mr. Coon said when they crossed the border, “The landscape was the same, the climate was the same, the hats and yurts looked the same, but the atmosphere was very different.” He said in Kyrgystan everything was open, but on the Chinese side of the border “everything is frozen, static.”
In both areas the people were predominantly Muslim and some still follow a nomadic life style.
