command pilot, flying various aircraft including B-lTs, B-47’s and transport aircraft during the Berlin Airlift in 1948.
His assignments included tours as a White House aide under Presidents Truman and Eisenhower; Duty with the Air Force Assistant Chief and Staff where he was NASA Project Officer in the Research and Development Division, earning him The Missle Badge. Later Col. Metzinger spent three years in The Office of The Joint Chiefs of Staff for which service he was twice decorated with the Joint Chiefs of Staff Commendation Medal. This assignment was followed by three yeras with the NATO staff in Brussels, Belgium. In 1971, after 29 years of service he retired to Round About Farm in Sperryville.
During his career he attending The Air Froce Tactical School, The Air Command Staff School and The Air Way College. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from The Uni/ versity of Maryland in 1954 and a Master of Science in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1964.
Col. Metzinger’s decorations include The Distinguished Flying cross, Air Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Connendation Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the National Defense Services award.
He was a member of the ArmyNavy Town Club in Washington, D.C. and the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington. He was also active in the local Lion’s Club and an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Washington.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mrs. Edna Hughes Marshbum-Metzinger; a daughter, Nina Coates of Boston; two sons, Timothy Dale Metzinger of Culpeper and Thomas Gene Metzinger of Harri
