To the Editor:
It seems to me to be time somebody looked into a dictionary for the definition of the word “socialism:” My Webster’s new Collegiate defines it so: “Any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownerhsip and adminstration of the means of production and distribution of goods.”
It does not refer, as Ruth Richards (Sept. 28) seems to believe, to the legitimate support of the Federal government of the armed (forces, including the medical expenses of the members thereof. I must say, though, that while I fully agree that this is a legitimate expense, it has been my observation over the years that the private— commercial, if you will—practice of medicine is in almost every way superior to that offered to our military personnel. I wish it were less expensive, and perhaps some day it will be so, but I would be sorry to have to settle for the other.
Also, please note, that contrary to Dr. Krebser’s assertion (Oct. 5), conservatives call the Clinton’s health plan socialist because it is socialist (see definition above), not for any other reason. Calling it socialism because we are against it, which is what Dr. Krebser says we are doing, would be lovely for the liberals because it would be foolish of us. They should be so lucky.
