To the Editor:
For the last ten years I have attempted to persuade the Virginia Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit at Baldwins Grocery in Washington to 35 mph.
Despite numerous letters and conversation with Bob Moore of VDOT expressing my concerns about the numerous children riding bikes and walking to Baldwins (including my own), this has not happened.
Five years ago, thanks to the efforts of Daphne Hutchinson, the speed limit was lowered to 45 mph. This, in my opinion is still too fast. As we all know, 45 mph often means 55-65-75 mph to some. With no enforcement coming from the Sheriffs Department, this stretch of road remains a speedway to many.
Unfortunately, last Sunday, Oct. 9, a serious accident occurred at Baldwin’s store. I do not know if speed was a factor in this accident, but it should be a wake up call to VDOT and the Sheriffs Department to finally do something about this potentially dangerous section of the road.
What if a child on a bicycle had been cruising by at the same time. It have seen many near misses at Baldwin’s so let’s not wait until it’s too late.
