Mr. Raney and his late wife modeled the winery after those they saw in Europe when Mr. Raney was stationed there with the U.S. Navy. In 1969, they began to build the winery and the house which they designed. The family searched the fields and neighborhood for the stones which make the thick walls of the house. Stone, wood, and glass blend to form a back drop for their collections of pre-Columbian art and Strasburg, Virginia crockery. The glass provides views of the countryside and of the tennis court which was added by the present Mrs. Raney. Interestingly, the house is divided so that
