Mr. Herndon said that he welcomes the hornets, as they eat “the bad bugs.” And they do not attack unless provoked. It has been a learning experience and a source of entertainment for the Herndons, and for any friends lucky enough to be invited to visit their bedroom and watch the goings-on of the family of approximately 100 hornets. The insects all enter the nest from one hole, about one inch wide, on the outside of the nest, or from the edge of the last tier completed.

The Herndons have been very patient with the hornets. At this time of year, when the air-conditioning is no longer used, they usually remove their air-conditioner from the bedroom window, but the nest is built around part of the raised window where the air-conditioner fits. So they will wait until the last hornet has left the nest until they take the air-conditioner out for the winter. Mr. Herndon said that he would like to remove the nest as a whole and save it, but when he has tried that before, the nest collapsed. He also said that it takes quite a lot of work to get all of the nest off of the window, and he uses razor blades to do so.

The Herndons enjoy watching , the hornets so much that they hope they don’t wait another 23 years before they visit again.
