Erlian is where it is, to secure that area for China. There were a number of police and military personnel about. The inhabitants ofte'n looked dark and tough as if they spent most of the day out of doors, and there were dozens of pool tables at outdoor “pool halls.” We noticed these things walking from the train platform about a mile into town where there was an extensive market under tent-like shelter.
We passed a school yard where beautifully dressed children played behind a wrought iron fence surrounding the school grounds. The business of train changing and later on border crossing took up half a day and half a night.
