In 1903 the artist Katherine A. Carl began living at the Chinese Imperial court in Beijing to paint a portrait of the Empress Dowager, Tzu Hsi, for display at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition celebrating the centenial of the Louisiana Purchase. When the fair closed, the picture was sent to Washington, D.C. where it is housed in the Museum of American Art.
