In a letter to the editor of the Rappahannock News this week, Lopez said, “I can only say that I, by my personality, was the cause of the trouble, not Cana, who I will always cherish as if she were my own daughter, and I ask for the Paynes to forgive me for what my personality did to them.”

He said that a fairly simple genetic test using cells from the lining of the mouth can determine whether they have XX (female) or XY (male) chromosomes. The Commonwealth had arranged for Lopez to be sent for genetic testing but Lopez refused to go.
Lopez was indicted last July for stealing several pieces of farm equipment, a Dodge Caravan, satellite receivers, electronic equipment, womens’ clothing, a gold ring with diamonds, and other various items of personal property from Nelson Payne of Flint Hill. Lopez was also charged with making a false application for food stamps at the Department of Social Services, and for obtaining a credit authorization for $250, under false pretenses, from DSS.
