Dorothy Height, leader of the Black Womens’ Coalition, spoke about women and men working together. Mr. Roy said that there were other women at the march too. Poet Maya Angelou was there, and Rosa Parks spoke about the march she was on with Martin Luther King.
The main message of the march was unity, said Mr. Roy, and everyone there had a great attitude. At one point, everyone was asked to hold a one dollar bill in the air and pass it to the person to their right. Mr. Roy said no one tried to pocket the money. The dollars were passed on and ended up in hugfl bins, which Mr. Roy said would gb to the NAACP, organizers of the march, the ACLU and other organizations. The Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan’s group, had brought 300,000 people to organize and set up the march, Mr. Roy said.
