Marta Tholand, one of Rappahannock County’s most beloved residents, died of cancer at her home in Washington, Oct. 14. She was 80 years old.
Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Marta Amalie Ubrika von Platen came to the United States in 1939 as a 24-year-old hostess to the Swedish exhibition at the New York World’s Fair. There she met Nils Kristian Gustaf Tholand, KVO, an entrepreneur also from Sweden. He was to be tier loving husband.
During the war years she served the Swedish Legation (there was then no embassy) in New York and Washington, D.C., as secretary. She and Mr. Tholand married and took up residence in New York City, and later they acquired the historic Piedmont Farm in the F.T. Valley south of Sperryville as a summer
