Film on Friday, Oct. 20

“Smoke” will be shown at the Theatre in Washington at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. Years ago the director Wayne Wang asked the novelist Paul Auster to work up one of his stories as a screenplay. The result — a highly cerebral intertwining of the lives of white and black characters in Brooklyn in 1990 — is obviously a labor of love. At the center of everything is Harvey Keitel, proprietor of a cigar store who has spent 14 years gabbing with customers, selling them cigars and holding forth from his comer of the world. Running time is 112 minutes.
