Gary Settle
John Henry Woodward has given 12 years good of service to the county as Sheriff.
Under Sheriff Woodward heavy emphasis has been placed on fiscal restraint, keeping his budget to the point where very few local dollars are needed to fund the Sheriff’s Office. The jail has made a small profit. The cost to the county of fringe benefits for department employees is at least in part covered by fires collected by Sheriffs deputies writing tickets for driving violations.
That has become one of the main issues of the campaign. The department is fairly criticized for having deputies devote too much of their time to patrolling with radar, work which is primarily the responsibility of the State Police. But if the State Police write the ticket, the state gets the money. If a Sheriffs deputy writes the ticket, the county gets a share of the money. However, many county citizens do not see speeding as the major concern of the Sheriffs Office. They would prefer to see other areas of law enforcement receive more attention.
Challenger Gary Settle, also a Rappahannock native whose wife is the high school secretary, brings to the table two years experience with our Sheriff s Office and a vitally important 10 years in the area in a wide range of work as a Virginia State Trooper and Sergeant.
Mr. Settle’s campaign has focused strongly on taking law enforcement against crimes on our back roads, on drug law enforcement, and bringing new accessibility of the Sheriff to the people. He is the right man at the right time to become Rappahannock’s Sheriff.
