harpsichord obligato, a solo harpsichord transcription of the A minor unaccompanied violin sonata, and the C minor cello suite. These works are all at the very core of the baroque chamber repertoire, and will be performed, as is the Smithsonian’s practice, on period instruments closely resembling those with which Bach would have been familiar. Ms. McDonald plays a late-seventeenthcentury violin by Jacobus Stainer, Mr. Slowik’s cello comes from the eighteenth-century Paris workshop of P.F. Grosset, and Mr. Weaver plays a German-style harpsichord built for him by Thomas and Barbara Wolf of The Plains.
Marilyn McDonald, professor of violin at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, has toured world-wide with the Smithson String Quartet, the Castle Trio, the Oberlin Baroque Ensemble and Ensemble Pierrot, a group specializing in contemporary music. She is a frequent soloist with orchestras and is concertmaster of the Peninsula Music Festival. James Weaver is supervisor of the Smithsonian’s Division of Cultural History, and has been involved with historic instruments » and performance programs at the National Museum of American History since 1966.
