second house was built by Sam Browning as a country retreat when he was Mayor of Culpeper. He had married Laura Lillard, so fell heir to the farm. The Parrishes added a room to unite the two buildings.
The residence is now a house graciously filled with antiques, most of which are family related. Included in these articles are some of the works by the world-renowned artist, Andrew Wyeth and other members of his family.
There are also some beautiful works by Mrs. Parrish’s daughter, Merrill Strange. One of the paintings by Mr. Wyeth is a portrait of Mrs. Parrish when she was a young lady, and a neighbor of the Wyeth family.
The view westward from the house is a magnificent vista of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The other two tour houses are “Crowfield,” the restored farm home of Carroll and Charles Kevis, and the resurrected 1790 log home of Paige and Charles Coombs.
The customary house tour tea will be at “Middleton,” the home of Mary Ann Kuhn, one of the showplace residences of the town of Washington.
This federal-style ante-bellum structure has recently undergone extensive redecoration to increase its beauty but still maintain the atmosphere of the gracious Southern living of the 1840s.
Proceeds from this tour/flower sale are used to fund the extensive outreach activities of the churchwomen.
