The Panther boys’ cross country team suffered their first loss of the season last Wednesday.
Unfortunately, Rappahannock had to run without two of their top three runners, who were lost due to illness. Central, the best team in the District, took advantage of this and blew away the field with an impressive score of 18. Rapp took second place with 56 points. Stonewall Jackson 60, Manassas Park 110 and George Mason 135 came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
The first-place runner was Central’s Jim Dlugasch, running a course record time of 16:14. Mark Jenkins, placing fourth, finished first from Rapp, running a time of 17:33, Jennings Hobson, a junior was second for the Panthers and eighth in the race. Chris Dennis, Caleb Property, and RJ White were Rappahannock’s last three scoring runners, placing thirteenth, fourteenth and seventeenth. Finishing up the varsity team were Jesse Rogers, 20th and Nile Watson, 22nd.
In the girls’ race, Rappahannock also came in second. George Mason took the meet, scoring a 46 to Rapp’s 47. Central placed third with 50 points while Stonewall Jackson scored 81. Manassas Park did not field a team for lack of runners.
Stonewall Jackson’s Sabrina Sabert won the meet, running a race time of 20:51. Holly Gangel, placing second, was once again Rapp’s top runner, finishing a} 21:05. Jessie Gheen 3rd, Myriam Lathuille 10th and Lauren Sharp 13th were the second, third, and fourth Panther runners. Rounding out the team was Emily Sims 19th, Robyn Kaye 23rd and Claire Schadler 27th.
On Monday, the Panthers ran against Luray and Page high schools in an out of district meet. Rappahannock won both races easily.
The Panthers had an almost-perfect 18 in the boys’ race, defeating Page (42) by 24 points. Luray finished third with 82 points.
