It’s hard to believe, but the Democratic Party has ruled our General Assembly for one hundred and twelve years. That’s almost twice as long as Queen Victoria ruled Great Britain, and six times longer than Genghis IGian’s rule. It’s time that the Democratic dynasty came to an end.
In 1883, the Democrats won majorities in both houses of the General Assembly. The following year, they pushed through the Anderson-McCormick election law, which gave them complete control over the election machinery, consisting of the registrars, the judges, and the clerks. They have been in power ever since. Through most of this period, they under-funded public education, and they fought tooth and nail to keep the public schools segregated. (Isn’t it ironic that public education is this year’s official Democratic campaign theme?) When the liberals took over in the 1970’s, they dumped the party’s pay-as-you-go fiscal policy and replaced it with tax-and-spend. We’ve been paying ever since.
Chastened by the Republicans’ showing in the 1993 elections, the Democrats allowed Gov. Allen’s welfare reform program to pass in 1994, but they came back strong this year to block his entire legislative package. Welfare reform is going very well, so Dickie Cranwell, the Democrats’ leader in the House, has vowed to unwind the program. If he can keep his majority, that is.
One-party dominance must come to an end. We can do our part by returning Del. Katzen to the House. Jay stands for strong public education and fiscal responsibility. He and his colleagues are ready to initiate a new era for the Commonwealth.
