In the early 1950s they moved permanently to Piedmont. There Mrs. Tholand busied herself raising a family, entertaining friends and business associates, and welcoming international members of the diplomatic corps to their home.
She served on the Rappahannock County School Board representing Hawthorn District from 1963 to 1970. She was active in Red Cross blood drives and worked as a pink lady- at the Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
Marta Tholand will be keenly missed for her zest, her warmth, and her dear friendship. She will be remembered as a gentle person who never said anything mean about anyone (who didn’t deserve it).
