follow-up interview on Jan. 12. Seven accidents were reported over the past five years, or .0057 per million vehicles. This compares favorably to the statewide average of .249 per million. These figures do not reflect the true nature of the problem, however, because many of the accidents are not reported. Moore stated that the stop sign at the intersection, for example, had to be replaced at least once a month, frequently more often, despite being in a concrete island.
Estes, whose home is on U.S. 522, said that he, too, had observed similar accidents. The intersection “was engineered based on 1929 (transportation technology) and has atrocious site distance west bound.” He is especially concerned that “someone will go under a tractor trailer and that will be the end of him.” He fully supports going forward with the project. “It’s been on the docket for 10 years.”
