Aufschnaiter (David Thewlis), he immediately runs into setbacks: an injured ankle, an avalanche and after World War II breaks out capture at the hands of the British in northern India.
After several botched escape attempts, Harrer and Aufschnaiter finally break free. Dressed in rags, they head toward Lhasa, the holy city of the Dalai Lama. Harrer eventually becomes both tutor and student of the young Dalai Lama, played by the delightful Bhutanese actor Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk.
You will be entranced by the rugged beauty of Tibet, which Harrer (in narration) describes as the “rooftop of the world." And there are other visual wonders, too, most of which have to do the garments, customs and manner of the Tibetans, who regard all invaders from Harrer to the Chinese goons with a sort of beautific innocent wonder. (PG-13, 131 minutes) Admission for adults is $5, children under 12 years of age, $3.
