In his interview, Moore responded that all states use those same construction standards and that the VDOT proposal was based on them. He also felt that, besides being very expensive, the artificiality of the retaining wall would not appeal to the residents who generally favor a more natural appearance.
Don Audette, of Sperryville, pointed out that the proposed 200 foot turn lane, with its 200 foot taper, “includes 75 feet from where the turn lane is now,” and “combined, is approximately 1,000 feet long — longer than the Centreville turn lane for the Nissan Pavilion.” He believes that the “line of sight problem is key” and that the project is “over-designed, excessive; not in keeping with the historic nature of Sperryville.”
Askew stated that the 200 feet/200 feet design was “the minimum we felt we could get by with.”
In the next few days, Moore expects to “have a couple of proposals as far as modifications.”
