Traffic calming
Several individuals stressed that traffic calming modifications needed to be incorporated into the project. They were concerned that a right turn lane, which is also part of the project, would be used as an additional lane to go around traffic, despite the fact that VDOT would clearly mark it as a turn lane. The open space could also be an invitation for drivers to speed up. Askew suggested that the right turn lane “could be eliminated if desired.”
Rich summarized the comments by saying that safety would be improved by constructing the left turn lane, but “make people obey the speed limit by not showing them huge open spaces.”
