The “Direc-ri,;’"'-J4 tions ’98” exhibi- REVIEW tion at the If Middle Street Gallery, showing new works by gallery artists between Jan. 2 and 25, is full of interest owing to the high quality of the pieces included. If this event foreshadows coming attractions, 1998 will be a banner year.
But the variety presents a challenge to the display organizer that has been well met. June Jordan deserves credit for her good taste and fine spatial sense which have made the most of everyone’s contributions to this show.
Gallery • visitors encounter at the door Mdry Brownstein’s “Waiting Woman and Dog,” a direct cement sculpture both humorous and full of pathos. On one visit following snow, I found water dripping from the face, suggesting tears. The attitude of the figure expresses patience and determination. Although her sculptures could hardly be simpler, Brownstein always invests them with feeling and authority.
