red maple seeds for food. “A tit! Just like ours!” Exclaimed the “twitcher.” The Carolina Chickadee has close relatives in England where they are called Tits.

The three had done their homework and studied the birds they might see in Virginia. A towhee, scratching among last year’s leaves on the woods floor, was quickly identified. The bird, a male, was startlingly beautiful with a jet black head and back, accented by chestnut along his flanks. His belly was white.

No other bird evoked the excitement of the Cardinal; none cracked the British reserve as the sight of the bright red bird singing in the dogwood tree. The morning bird walk was declared a success. We parted. I came home to re-think the beauty of the Cardinal and vowed I would never take it for granted again.
