Succinctly put, if you don’t play good defense, you don’t win basketball. And according to all three Rappahannock boys basketball coaches, the Panthers need to work harder on defense.
“I think we have good enough shooters offensively,” said Varsity coach Eugene Baltimore, “but defensively, sometimes we jhave mental lapses.” The Strasburg Rams plowed their way to a double victory in last week’s away games, taking down the varsity 80/57, and the junior varsity 55/32.
“Good teams find a way to win, even on the road with a hostile home crowd. And we have some tough teams coming up.”
But it’s not all bad news. Varsity high scorer Daniel Settle posted an impressive 19 points, leaving the Panthers’ varsity record at six wins and three losses — all to Strasburg. Coach Baltimore believes that if the team can improve its defense fundamentals and reduce fouls, they have a great chance to win the Bull Run District championship.
“The team chemistry this year is excellent,” confirmed assistant coach Reed Gillespie. “Our starters are really talented and the bench is working hard to improve. Last year, we had a little more depth,” but this team is very close knit and works very well together. “They are really focusing on what’s best for the team.”
