(Nos. 13 and 14), are similar paintings of abstracted, splotched cats, one green with blue eyes and an orange nose stalking under a yellow moon and the other, a blue cat with orange-yellow eyes against a black background. Both have the same spiky ears and fix one with an uncertain expression. They might be illustrations for a book or a cartoon. They show Ruffner in an unusually light mood.
This is a strong, accomplished exhibition that underscores the artist’s fine training and professional qualities. I thought I detected influences by Gauguin, Modigliani, Picasso, and other postimpressionist painters of nearly a century ago. Some of the paintings have no frames. Others have especially beautiful and individual ones. I want to describe and comment upon many more than I have, but the sensible thing is to urge art lovers to see and drink in Ruffner’s intensively expressed, emotional statements. One visit really isn’t time enough to let these pictures cast their spell upon you.
