fruit tree saplings that would eventually mature into Muskrat Haven’s popular pick-your-own peach and apple orchards. They also planted acres of strawberries, one of the highest yield-peracre crops and the all time favorite of the pick-your-own public. Strawberries came with their own problems, though, requiring expensive equipment or back-breaking labor. Call opted for the equipment, buying second-, third-, or fourth-hand models and upgrading as he could afford it. Son Hunter, a certified mechanic, keeps them all humming.
Other high-yield berries followed — tart blueberries, plump red and black raspberries, blackberries “the size of your thumbnail,” said Call. Berries for home-made jellies and jams, peaches for preserves, apples for sauce and applebutter, all carrying the Muskrat Haven label and sold from the weathered stand on U.S. 211. “We started out with Hunter selling sweet corn off the back of a truck,” along the road, explained Call.
Having buyers turn into the driveway didn’t work. “We couldn’t get enough visibility and it was dangerous for people slowing down and making turns.” Call was finally able to purchase adjacent property
