The children are taking over more and more responsibility as they and their father grow older. Elder son Manfred took over the crop spraying program, one of the most critical operations on the farm. “If you miss the first or second spraying,” said Call, “you don’t get peaches.”
According to Call, Manfred’s “pet project” is growing and promoting a wild bird mix under the Muskrat Haven label through the county co-ops. The family obtains land for this type of venture, haymaking and other large scale operations by reconditioning abused or neglected farm land for nearby property owners or through sharecropping arrangements.
Daughter Darlene is the greenhouse and produce manager, starting seedlings in pots, then transplanting them, and overseeing them in the field. She raises flowers, broccoli, . squash, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupes, pumpkins, colorful Indian corn, and acres of Silver Queen sweet corn.
“We don’t raise what isn’t productive, like green beans or butter beans,” said Call. “They are too labor-intensive.”
