I had the happy experience of being in a blind near a wood thrush nest when one young bird was reluctant to leave the nest. Skillfully hidden among thorny catbriere, the mud and grass nest — much like that of a robin, a close relative — was built on a horizontal limb about five feet from the ground.
My blind was of burlap over a metal frame. I had spent many hours in this blind observing and photographing the infinitely complex and interesting activity at the thrush nest that contained four young. The time came when the parents wanted them out of the nest.
On entering my blind early one morning, I discovered that only one young was in the nest. Had a predator taken the others? I quickly found the answer when I noticed that an adult was feeding the three fledglings not too far from the nest. The loose weave of the burlap made
