Kvames’ mechanical ability is evident even before crossing the Thornton River into the Oldway Art Center. The entrance has a suspension bridge he built from a 1934 Ferris wheel. Kvames said it took him five years to prepare the bridge and, with the help of Michael Doyle, three weekends to assemble it. Five thousand pound counter-weights buried at each end of the bridge give it the weight it needs to support itself.
He said the Ferris wheel had been in England during World War II, later in Cuba and at the Sperryville Carnival where it was finally abandoned at Estes’ junk yard. Kvarnes needed a bridge and he saw the design possibilities of the Ferris wheel when he noticed a plaque on the side stating the Eli Bridge Company made it. He appropriately incorporated the plaque into one end of the bridge. /
