The Albemarle County Democratic party announced the donation of $1500 in scholarships to honor the county’s first black supervisor and his wife.
The scholarships to be granted annually, honor James Robert and Nellie King Butler, former residents of Rappahannock.
An Albemarle extension agent for more than 35 years, 83 years old James Butler became in the late 1960’s the first black to head an extension office in Virginia and in 1981 became the first black elected to the county board of supervisors.
