If you add a few plants to this year’s gardening plans for holiday use throughout the year, you will get increased satisfaction from both your garden efforts and the holidays.
Corn on the cob is an American tradition for Fourth of July picnics. Some gardeners like the challenge of being able to harvest right in their own backyards In most parts of Virginia, this requires some real planning and preparation. The soil should be prepared the fall before so its ready for an early start. Clear plastic can be applied to the rows to warm the soil faster, giving a head start of several days to a week. Pre-germination of the seed can speed up the harvest by an additional day or two.

When planning the crop, try the decorative miniature popcorn called “Tom Thumb.” It has 3-inch ears that are ideal for dried arrangements in the autumn. The ears should be allowed to pollinate. The resulting crop would be of poor quality.
