One lone bird remained in the nest. The female visited the nest with choice-looking morsels in her bill; these she refused to give to the begging young. This went on for most of one day. The reluctant young one opened his mouth and begged and begged; the female perched silent and determined, just out of reach. She frequently left, but soon returned with another bit of food which she refused to poke into the bright yellow mouth of her fledgling or what she had hoped would be a fledgling and no longer nestling.
