He collaborated on other projects with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lanford Wilson, director Marshall Mason, and actors John Malkovich, Tyne Daly, Christopher Reeve, Jennifer Jason-Leigh, Judd Hirsch, Christine Lahti, and Jon Voight, among others.
Born in Germany, Kater moved with his family from Munich to New Jersey in the early 1960s. Beginning piano lessons at age 7, Kater discovered the creative freedom characteristic of his adult work only a few years later.
