When we reflect on the examples of community service and dedication that James and Nellie Butler have provided, we attempt to pass on their legacy of hard work and perseverance to our children, William B. Harvey, county Democratic Party chairman told the audience of about two dozen in the county office building.

James Butler sat quietly in his wheelchair during the ceremony. Afterwards, his, wife said “the cause is dear to his heart.” This is a project James is always working toward: funding scholarships for deserving students, said Nellie Butler.

“The party will hand out three scholarships of $500 to a senior at each of the county’s public high schools ' - Albemarle, Western and Murray High Schools,” said Harvey.

A fourth scholarship will be established when Monticello High School opens in the fall. The scholarships will be awarded based on an essay contest.
