At the conclusion of budget discussions, Mayor Willis noted that this year’s Town of Washington budget was $155,800, compared to last year’s $175,800-the reduction accounted for by reduced funds directed to capital reserves.
In other activities conducted during the April 14 portion of the session, County Administrator John McCarthy reported on approvals on the proposed Clabert Smoot subdivision, and the council similarly provided its approval contingent upon VDOT and the Courts OK of town boundary’ changes.
Mayor Willis discussed reallocation of carryover funds from last year. He proposed spending $300 for trees to screen the new shed built by the county (and to be used, as well, by the town), $800 for landscaping at the courthouse, $400 for file cabinets, and $2100 for new benches. The council approved expenditures for all but the benches.
John Byam reported on town kiosk progress, noting that it is nearing completion and that they are looking for a suitable site possibilities are between the post office and Willis’ place, the comer by the Episcopal Church, or in the corner of Eileen Day’s parking lot.
Councilman Thompkins discussed Fourth of July planning progress, noting that the crafts fair will commence at noon in lieu of 10 a.m. in deference to the Sabbath, and he presented and received approval for a resolution indemnifying landowners
