The Sheriff’s program involves deputies taking less fortunate families to K-mart in Warrenton to purchase Christmas presents. Sherertz said that some families did not participate because of pride.
Ms. Holstead and Ms. Hoadley responded that creative outreach has proven highly successful in attracting families to the program.
They also feel that the cost of a Healthy Families initiative, approximately $3,000 per family in the first year and $2,700 per family per year afterwards, is small in comparison to the alternatives.
Placing children in foster homes, a young adult facing a life in jail, and child abuse cases - all results of poor parenting or childhood outcomes - can cost tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
The group has two immediate tasks before moving ahead. The first task is to gather data for a community profile to help them determine what specific services are needed in the county. Secondly, they would need to develop a resource guide of community services.
