A dump truck full of gravel went off a bridge on Arrowhead Lane, Just off of Old Hollow Road near Sperryville, shortly after 10:30 a.m. on April 16. The driver escaped without injury.
Fire companies from Amissville and Washington responded to the accident. According to eyewitnesses and Washington Fire Chief Roger Roach, the truck was too wide for the bridge. The truck was delivering the gravel to a private residence on Arrowhead Lane.
Roach speculated that the driver didn’t angle the truck properly, causing it to fall off the bridge and end up on its side in the north fork of the Thornton River.
The truck was in the river for approximately four hours before being removed. Many gallons of antifreeze, hydraulic fluid, and diesel fuel spilled into the river.
