The shape of a beech leaf (they range from 2 1/2 to 5 inches long) is what botanists call, ovate or obovate, meaning roughly egg shaped. Each has a long, gracefully tapering point.
The symmetry is in the venation. From a prominent mid-vein that runs from the base to the tip, precisely straight side veins branch out toward the leaf’s edge. Each ends in a graceful sawlike tooth on the leaf’s margin.
The bark of this tree is smooth, gray to silvery, and tight. Most mature beeches invite carving by those who want a kind of cheap immortality; a record of transient love.
I have seen carvings in beeches that were incised 40 years ago. The tree, in attempting to correct the mutation, had made it a permanent record.
