Ivan Ussach has come to Rappahannock to heal himself and others with Sivananda Yoga. He is a certified instructor, having studied yoga training in California, Canada and New York.
Sivananda was Ussach’s first exposure to yoga. He was introduced to it when he visited the Sivananda Center in New York.
The Sivananda Yoga Organization is based on the teachings of an Indian with the same name who lived for the first half of this century in northern India.
Ussach explains the Sivananda approach: “Sivananda is a wellrespected gentle approach, gradual, patient and non-competitive. Stretching, breathing, and relaxation techniques are employed to achieve a calm, centered, balanced, energized state of being where the emotional, spiritual and physical are all working together. The benefits are unlimited depending on how much the individual puts into it.”
Ussach spent most of his life developing his analytical skills, ignoring the physical and spiritual.
Ussach was born in Flatbush, N.Y. He lived in Bay Ridge for a time and attended high school in Amityville, Long Island. For those of you who remember The Amityville Horror, Ussach was living there when it happened.
Ussach attended Columbia University Graduate School studying Environmental Science. He knew he wanted to do something in the live sciences. Ussach got an internship with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection.
