inose arouna me were crasmng. ine oppressive heat, the insects and the sheer energy expended were taking a toll on my fellow campers.

At the Saturday night campfire, I was hoping it would go on for a couple more hours. The youngest campers were falling asleep in their exhausted parents’ arms.

The kids were universally hot and cranky and the grownups were checking their watches. Even the indomitable staff looked a little frayed around the edges.

It had been a great weekend for everyone, but it was time to head back to real life. Katie and I sang “Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore” on the car ride home. After our third chorus, I was still going strong, but my daughter said, “Mommy, I think I just want to rest now, OK?” (It was her way of asking, “Can we stop being so happy now, Mom?”)

I smoothed her pigtails and replied, “Ok honey, but you have to sing ‘Cornin’ ‘Round the Mountain’ with me later.”

She smiled indulgently.

I think Katie may be getting too mature for Cloverbud camp. Ill just have to go by myself next summer.
